An Overview of Small Business Administration Programs [*Registration Required*]
For those feeling the slowdown in the private sector due to COVID-19, now is the time to invest in your business while mitigating risk by diversifying your customer base and joining the thousands of businesses that sell their products and services to the largest customer on earth—Uncle Sam. The Federal Government pays trillions of dollars each year to private companies under contracts for the very same goods and services offered to consumers and private entities. The Government also funds the research and development of innovation solutions for commercialization through grants in amounts as high as $1M. Much of these contracts, grants, and opportunities are specifically set-aside for small, women-owned, veteran-owned, and minority-owned businesses by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Join Shayn Fernandez, lead corporate and government contract attorney at Rockridge Venture Law, and learn about the variety of ways to do business with the Federal Government.

Will This Float?: Black Founders Edition
Link to event: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_eFty3Wj6R5ewbswlHYq2Gg

CO.LAB is excited to announce the 2020 Will This Float?: Black Founders Edition! This year’s competition will be hosted virtually during this year’s Startup Week Chattanooga. Why Black Founders?
In this period of economic volatility and increased discourse on racial equity, the importance of supporting entrepreneurship in the Black community has reached a new high. Studies highlight that entrepreneurship is among the most significant pathways to creating wealth in the Black community. Now more so than ever it is critical to provide a platform and pathway for Black founders to showcase innovative and entrepreneurial ideas.
How Does it Work?
Submissions are narrowed down to the top 6 finalists, who will present their concepts and businesses in a 3-minute pitch to an audience and panel of judges. Finalists based on the current status of their companies will be divided into 2 categories: Launch ($0-25k in annual revenue) and Up and Running ($25k or more in annual revenue). We use a combination of feedback from our panel of judges as well as crowdsourced voting to determine which idea floats best!

B Corps & Benefit Corporations [*Registration Required*]
Companies ranging from patagonia® to Warby Parker® to Hootsuite® have successfully scaled while adopting triple-bottom-line business practices. Essentially, these companies have proven that you can be profitable and still be good corporate citizens. Key ways that companies can implement corporate social responsibility into operations is through (legal) benefit corporation structures and (business) B Corp certifications. Often, these business and legal modes are conflated and confused. This webinar will provide an overview of each and distinguish one from another. This presentation is geared towards investors, founders, directors, marketers, and general counsel alike. In it we'll cover: • The history in a nutshell of shareholder primacy (i.e. profit above all) in corporate law; • The development of the legal benefit corporation entity and B Corp certification standard in response to shareholder primacy; • How benefit corporations and B Corps are related and how they differ; • Attitudes of millennials and industry trends towards corporate social responsibility; • Increasing importance of trustmarks in e-commerce; and, • Why this matters for our economy. Rockridge Venture Law® is Tennessee's only Best For The World B Corp and a founding member of B Tennessee. Kevin Christopher is founder and Venture Lead of RVL®. Kevin is a registered patent attorney and serial entrepreneur, founding companies in renewables, biopharma, men's personal care, and law. Depending on the stage of the company and the amount of capital raised, the investment may be structured in a variety of ways and investors may range from friends and family to large institutional investors. The terms of the investment are often proposed in a short and non-binding document called a "Term Sheet". For many, the concepts in the Term Sheet are new or misunderstood but can have a lasting impact on the business. Restaurant Recovery in the Midst of Pandemic
2020 has been a hugely challenging year for the food and beverage industry - specifically restaurants. After the initial closure of bars and restaurants, many businesses were left with little to no guidance on how to proceed in this new climate - let alone how to do so profitably and safely. The team at Proof Bar and Incubator have spent hundreds of hours researching this subject and talking with professionals all over the globe regarding their reopening successes and shortcomings. This event will share a lot of our research and information with attendees - as well as how you, as a patron, can help support (and hopefully save) the establishments you so love to support.

Moving Through the Stress of a Start Up
Starting a new business is a stressful time. This workshop will help the participant learn to use his/her body as a resource to work through anxiety and stress. Emotions have a physical component; anxiety and stress can cause increased heart rate, flushing, sweaty palms… The brain causes the anxiety; the body responds. For this reason, using the body to relieve the anxiety makes sense. In this workshop, participants will learn to use movement to release tension and give the energy associated with stress some place to go.

STAY WEIRD: SUCCEEDING IN ENTREPENERUSHIP BY STICKING OUT *Watch Again!*
Session Description: In a world that pushes us to be the same, entrepreneurship tends to reward those who are willing to stand out. Jess shares her three secrets to success, based on the ability to "swim in the small pool" of leaders risking vulnerability and their individual quirks. Participants are asked to connect their values and personal "weirdness" in order to find opportunities to pursue their individual dreams.

Speaker: Jess Diehl

Speaker BIO: Jess Diehl is the co-founder of zest organics, a company dedicated to bringing comfort through safer textiles for families. Their products are sold at more than 500 stores nationwide, including Nordstrom and Crate & Barrel. Through a commitment to only using GOTS certified organic cotton in their production, the company and its customers have kept more than 350,000 pounds of pesticides out of the environment over the past four years.

Prior to starting zestt, Jess founded and sold an e-learning company offering services to state and federal agencies. Before that she worked in higher education, offering leadership development and experiential learning programs for students and community members. She is a proud graduate of James Madison University and the University of Pennsylvania and serves as an adjunct professor and speaker on the topics of entrepreneurship, mission-based business and marketing

Leverage consumer psychology to get sales before you launch
Why do people buy the things they buy? What influences a business to choose one vendor over the other?
(Hint: It's about more than just the value proposition, having the best product or service, or even the sales & marketing strategies!)

Most new entrepreneurs don't take the time to gather the relevant market insights that they can then leverage to get sales leads and deposits before launching their business ― and this makes the early phase of any new venture much more stressful and riskier than it has it be.

Startup Champs LLC, a prelaunch growth consultancy with clients worldwide, advises high-net-worth individuals to Fortune 1000 corporations on data-driven plans that lead to securing deposits, or even pre-orders, before launching new brands and companies.

Join serial entrepreneur, investor, and Startup Champs CEO & Founder Alex Lavidge in this interactive presentation on how to gather the right market insights, engage online in collaborative design, fundamentals of marketing experimentation, and sales automation tools not commonly used by small businesses and startups that can help mitigate risk and increase the probability of success for any startup concept. "Unless you pull the data together from all of these four phases to put together a customized plan," Alex says, "your strategy is likely going to be flawed. Without a data-driven strategy, the repercussions will be emotionally and physically taxing on you and your team as you burn through cash trying to figure out by trial and error what you’re doing."
Prior to Startup Champs LLC, Alex was a Director of Startup Programs at CO.LAB and VP Business Development at Variable, Inc based in Chattanooga. He earned his BA from The University of Iowa in Organizational Studies & Entrepreneurship. Additionally, he studied Market Research at the London School of Economics as well as Peak Performance Psychology at Stanford University before beginning his career in Silicon Valley. Last year he traveled 6 continents where he was a public speaker and consultant for numerous clients.

Stop Being "Busy" and Actually Get Sh!t Done
Ineffective workflows are all around us. Especially in the startup world, there's an underlying "more work is better" spirit that often causes workdays to grow longer and creep into weekends. DOMINATING THE MARKET: CREATING AND MAINTAINING AN EFFECTIVE IP ENFORCEMENT PROGRAM [*Registration Required*]
A brand is a powerful thing. Successful brands transition into household names, whose name alone is worth millions in revenue. Building consumer recognition and trust is no easy feat. It can take thousands in marketing, and twice as much sweat to accomplish. And yet, the rewards are great. When a business is creating a brand, it should protect it early on through trademark registration. Essentially, by registering your name, logo, or other trademark with a state, federal or international trademark registry, you can protect the goodwill of your business from those who would take that brand for themselves—whether that taking by innocent or intentional. But how can a business use a registered trademark to its benefit? In this workshop, we'll explore how startups can wield the power trademarks to eliminate the competition, while increasing its presence in their place. In short, we're planning for total market domination.

How we build community
"So much about building software—more than anyone wants to admit—is etiquette" - Paul Ford - Wired. It is rules all the way down. Folks get together at conferences and on message boards to determine what is good and what is bad. They determine how things "should be", but this also determines who gets to be "in" and who gets to be "out". It is all about access. In a time in this world where technology has drastic affects on our everyday lives - access to technology is crucial. So what should we be thinking about as we build our tech communities? How can we improve access and be aware of our own biases in providing access to others. This talk will shed some light on how we may go about building communities that are truly welcoming and more representative of the communities that we live in and why it is crucial that we do so.
